The photograph shows the mountains that surround Lake Tekapo. The town of Tekapo is well known for the Church of the Good Shepherd built in 1935 located on a small bluff on the southern side of the Lake. Next to the church is a statue of a dog that commemorates the working sheep dogs of MacKenzie country. On the west side of the lake is Mt John on top of which are several observatories. The whole area was declared a dark sky reserve because the conditions (absence of artificial light) are ideal for studying the heavens. Mt John can be accessed by road, but far better to hike up from near the hot springs at the base of the mountain. There is a wonderful 360 degree viewpoint at the top of Mt John and a great cafe for light meals and a coffee.
