This peak  (1,446 meters) is so named because it looks like the cap worn by Frenchmen during the French Revolution. It dominates the Lyell Highway while driving to the west. It can also be clearly seen from the cirque on the Overland Track. The peak is normally accessed from a purpose built car park on the Lyell Highway. The track has had considerable upgrades in recent years thanks to the generosity of Dick Smith. The normally boggy and muddy section known as the Loddons (or Sodden Loddons) has raised boardwalk sections which speeds up the travel time from the start to the first hut at Lake Vera. There are two huts one at Lake Vera and one at Lake Tahune. The latter has been rebuilt in recent years. While the hike takes 3-4 days, runners I know do the whole thing in a day carrying only a light rucksack.

While the final section looks difficult the track exploits a line of weakness through the cliffs with only one awkward move. The views from the summit are brilliant if you can get a fine day.
